1-2 COMPONENT CODE NUMBERS
1-2.1 Codes are the basis for identifying the components used on Navistar trucks. They are used by sales personnel
ordering the truck, by manufacturing to build that truck and by parts personnel to service the truck. Many items in this
manual are identified by codes or by model. Therefore, it is important to understand their meaning.
1-2.2 THE CODE STRUCTURE IS AS FOLLOWS:
00 000 0000
GROUP NUMBER
All International truck parts are
divided into 17 groups, numbered
from 01 to 17. Code sheets in
some
instances
show
group
numbers 17 through 22 for wheels,
rims and related items.
UNIT NUMBER
Unit numbers identify the various
components within a group. These
unit numbers are also used as
International
model
numbers.
They
are
sometimes
directly
significant, as in rear axles, where
the first digit of the unit number
indicates the type of axle: 0 for
single reduction, 1 for two-speed, 2
for a double reduction and 3 or 4
for a tandem.
ASSIGNMENT NUMBER
This number may indicate model
differences, different sources of
supply, manufacture at different
facilities,
different
equipment
applications or design changes.
You will need this assignment
number only in the few cases
where the service parts catalog
listings
are
broken
down
by
assignment numbers. In all other
cases you can ignore these last
four digits.
