SECTION ECylinder HeadCYLINDER HEAD MAINTENANCEThe number of hours run has no bearing on when tooverhaul the cylinder head on the 4.236 marine engineas carbon beyond a superficial coating does not formand accumulate on the cylinder head and pistons as isthe case with a petrol engine.Ease of starting and performance are the determiningfactors, therefore the cylinder head should only beremoved when it is absolutely necessary. Before commencing to overhaul the cylinder headensure that all joints, gaskets and parts expected to berequired are available. To Remove the Cylinder Head1.Drain coolant from heat exchanger, cylinder blockand exhaust manifold jacket (See enginephotographs for location of drain points).2.Disconnect the battery terminals to eliminate thepossibility of a short circuit.3.Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaustmanifold. Blank off the end of the exhaust pipe toprevent objects being dropped into it.4.Disconnect sea water inlet and outlet connectionsfrom heat exchanger and exhaust manifold jacket, and connection between heat exchanger and freshwater pump.5.Disconnect the lub. oil pipes from the lub. oil cooler.6.Remove the heat exchanger securing setscrewsand withdraw the heat exchanger.7.Disconnect and remove the atomiser leak-off pipeassembly. Blank off the ports on the top of theatomisers.8.Remove the fuel pipe from the fuel filter to the fuelinjection pump inlet, also the fuel pipe from the fuelfilter to the fuel injection pump outlet. Blank off theexposed parts.9.Disconnect the fuel pipe from the fuel lift pumpoutlet to the fuel filter. Remove the two setscrewswhich secure the fuel filter to the cylinder head andwithdraw the filter from the engine.10.Remove the breather pipe from between thecylinder head cover and the induction manifold.11.Disconnect and remove the high pressure fuelpipes from the fuel injection pump and atomisers.Blank off the exposed ports. Release and removethe nuts securing the atomisers and carefullyextract the atomisers from the cylinder head (seeFig. E.1).12.Disconnect the fuel pipe and electrical lead at thethermostart unit.13.Remove the air filter. Remove the induction andexhaust manifolds.14.Detach the rocker cover from the engine byremoving the four screws which secure it to thecylinder head.15.Remove the four rocker bracket securing nuts andwashers, and remove the rocker assembly from thecylinder head (see Fig E.2). Remove the pushrods.16.Release and remove the cylinder head nuts orsetscrews in the reverse order of the tighteningsequence shown in Fig. E.1).17.Remove the cylinder head. Do not insert ascrewdriver or any other sharp instrument betweenthe cylinder head and block. When removed placethe cylinder head on a flat surface, preferablywood, to avoid damage.
