SERVICE MANUALCYLINDER HEAD & VALVESSection 3PROCEDURETighten cylinder head bolts following the assembly stepslisted:1.Lubricate bolt threads, bolt head seating areasand washers (where applicable) with cleanengine oil.2.Tighten bolts in three (3) stages: Stage 1Following sequence "A" tighten bolts to 150 N-m(110 Ibf-ft).Stage 2 Following sequence "A" tighten bolts to210 N-m (155 Ibf-ft).Stage 3 Following sequence "B" tighten bolts, inrows, to 225 N•m (165 Ibf-ft).NOTE: DO NOT back bolt off, "pull up" to torquelevel indicated.IMPORTANT: This procedure accommodates bothold and new style cylinder head bolts.NOTE: Check the two end rocker arms for freedomof motion after torquing first stage.8.Adjust valve lash following procedure describedin this Section.9.Adjust valve timing following proceduredescribed in this Section.10.Install valve cover as follows:a.Replace old packing rings with new undervalve cover bolt washers to avoid oil leaks.b.Replace old valve cover gasket with a newgasket to assure an oil tight seal.c.Tighten the bolts to 3 N•m (26 Ibf-in.).11.Install and connect leak lines to injection nozzleholders.12.Using a new gasket, install and securethermostat and thermostat housing to cylinderhead. Secure hoses.13.Using new gaskets install intake and exhaustmanifolds as described in Section 2.14.Reconnect fuel lines to injection nozzles andpump. Torque fittings to 47 N•m (35 Ibf-ft).15.Fill cooling system to proper level (seeOperator's Manual).16.Operate engine under load for at least one hour,to bring it up to normal operating temperature(see ENGINE RUN IN SCHEDULE in Section 5).17.After removal of cylinder head and replacementof a new cylinder head gasket, cylinder headbolts must be re-torqued and valve adjustmentsre-checked following the first hour of operation.(Refer to Fig. 41 for torquing sequence).IMPORTANT: "New Style" cylinder head bolts withflange heads must NOT be intermixed with "OldStyle" bolts and hardened washers.
