ENGINE DIAGNOSTIC TOOLSSection 4OPERATING PROCEDURES1.Select the 1/4 in. transducer (Black).2.Clamp on the 1/4 in. transducer to the No. 1fuel injection line (See Figure 11) at the injectionnozzle end.IMPORTANT•THE TRANSDUCER MUST BESECURELY ATTACHED ON A STRAIGHTSECTION OF THE FUEL LINE WITHIN 4IN. OF THE INJECTION NOZZLE.•CLEAN THE FUEL LINE WITH ABRASIVECLOTH OR STEEL WOOL TO REMOVEALL PAINT PRIOR TO AFFIXING THETRANSDUCER.•DO NOT ALLOW THE TRANSDUCER TOCONTACT THE INJECTION LINE NUT.•DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THETRANSDUCER ON THE FUEL LINE. A"SNUG" FIT IS ALL THAT ISNECESSARY FOR PULSE DETECTION.3.Connect ground clip from transducer to anappropriate ground as shown in Figure 11.4.Connect transducer to timing unit PICK-UP (4,Figure 10) using transducer connecting cable (9,Figure 10).IMPORTANTTRANSDUCER MUST BE DRY. WETCONDITIONS CAN CAUSE ERRATICREADINGS. IF ERRATIC READINGSARE OBSERVED, REMOVETRANSDUCER, WIPE LINE ANDTRANSDUCER WITH A CLEAN, DRYCLOTH AND SPRAY TRANSDUCER,ON ALL SURFACES, WITH A WATERDISPLACING SUBSTANCE, SUCH ASWD-40® AND RECLAMP ON THEFUEL LINE.5.Connect the POWER SOURCE CLIPS (7,Figure 10) to the vehicle battery terminals or 8 to28 volt supply [red to "+", black to "-"] OBSERVEPOLARITY OR DAMAGE TO CABLES MAYRESULT!6.6.9 Liter Diesel uses magnetic probe method fordetermining crankshaft position.•MAGNETIC PROBE METHOD - CRANKSHAFTMONITORING 6.9 LITER DIESEL only.1.Connect the magnetic probe (Figure 11) to thetiming unit by inserting plug into probe JACK (3,Figure 10).2.Insert the magnetic probe into the magnetic pick-up access hole located on the engine (Figure11).3.Turn the Function Switch (1, Figure 10) to"OFFSET". With power applied to the timingunit, the DEGREE DISPLAY should light up andread "SET 20.0".NOTE: The 6.9L Diesel has a 20° OFFSET thus noOFFSET adjustment is required.4.Turn FUNCTION CONTROL SWITCH TO"PROBE". The RPM display should read 0 andthe DEGREE DISPLAY should read 0.0.5.Set timing unit to "HIGH TRIGGER" mode.IMPORTANTHIGH TRIGGER MODE MUST BEUSED WITH THIS METER. USE OFTHE LOW TRIGGER SETTING WILLRESULT IN FAULTY TIMINGREADING.CGES-240-4Printed in United States of AmericaPage 15
