Differential.Power from the diesel engine (7) is sent fromthe engine flywheel (12) through the torque converter(6). The output shaft of the torque converter sends thepower through upper drive shaft (5) to the input shaft ofthe planetary transmission (2). The planetarytransmission (2) has six clutches which are hydraulicallyengaged. Two clutches turn and the other four clutchesare stationary. Four planet systems are used incombination with the six clutches to give four speedsforward and two speeds reverse. The direction andspeeds are changed manually. The output shaft of the planetary transmissionsends the power to the output transfer gears (1). Fromthe output transfer gears (1), power goes through thelower drive shaft (8) to the pinion shaft and bevel gear(9). The pinion shaft and bevel gear send the powerthrough the differential (10). The differential sends thepower to the final drives and wheels (11).Splines are used as connections between theaxles and the sun gears of the final drives. When thesun gears turn, the planet gears in the carrier movearound the inside of the stationary ring gear. This actionturns the carrier and the wheels.2-80
