TORQUE CONVERTER CLEARANCE CHECKS
3.
There must be a minimum radial (running)
clearance between the turbine and stator.
Check the clearance between the turbine and
stator as follows:
a)
Put turbine (I) on a smooth flat surface.
Install tooling (A) at four positions around
the turbine as shown.
c)
Put stator (3) in position in the turbine.
Make sure the welded fins in the stator
are not in contact with tooling (A).
c)
Put tooling (B) against the stator as
shown. Move the stator toward tooling (B)
until it makes contact with the inside
diameter in the turbine. Adjust the dial
indicator until it is on zero. Slide stator (3)
180° away from tooling (B) until it makes
contact with the other side of the turbine.
Make
a
record
of
the
dimension
measured.
d)
Make this check at several locations
around the turbine. Make a record of
each dimension measured. The largest
dimension measured is used for the
clearance between the two parts. The
total clearance measured across the
diameters must be .012 to .018 in. (0.30
to 0.46 mm) with a maximum permissible
clearance of .030 in. (0.76 mm). The
radial (running) clearance is half of the
dimensions measured.
