THE INSIDE STORY OF DIGITAL DEPTH FINDINGYou have just purchased the most useful andsophisticated digital depth instrument on the marinemarket today. Utilizing Aqua Meter's pioneeringtechnology in shallow water depth-sounding, andleadership in marine instrumentation, your new AquaProbeR digital will provide accurate valuable information,It is an important investment in helping you withnavigating, piloting, and anchoring. You already may be familiar with other types of depthsounding equipment--flashers and/or graph recorders-which offer you a wide range of information. If so, youwill be accustomed to making judgements based on a"filtering" process your experience has taught your mindto make. When you are given a choice of readings, youautomatically decide which one, or ones, are useful andcorrect. For example, when you're using one of the popularflasher depth finders, your eye "sees" all themiscellaneous signals and blips displayed on the dial. But your mind registers only the strong signal on thatportion of the dial in which reason tells you the correctdepth reading is located. Your judgmental processcategorizes the others as sub-surface interference, thermal layering, or fish which may or may not beimportant.Or, when you're scanning the graph from a chartingrecorder, you can identify the actual layers ofinterference, or fish, along with the contours of thebottom. Your mind automatically "averages" the bottomreadings into a useful range of depth information andstores or rejects any other readings.Graphs and flashers, then, can simultaneously display amultitude of return signals for your interpretation.Conversely, any digital depth finder operates like acomputer in that it is programmed to interpret the returnsignals for you, and will display only the depth of thestrongest, shallowest echo. Also, unlike the other typesof depth instruments, it will not give you a multitude ofreturns from which to choose. In fact, a great deal of very sophisticated interferencesuppressing circuitry has been built into your new AquaProbe digital. It expressly prevents some of theextraneous returns which are normal and desirable forthe flasher or graph, from interfering with the primarypurpose of the digital instrument-giving you the clearest, strongest, most correct and quickly-read bottomindication in large, clear, easy-to-read numerals.Teaching you how to achieve these results is thepurpose of this manual.ContentsThe Inside Story of Digital Depth finding ..................2Quick Tuning Procedures.........................................3Installation................................................................5Operation..................................................................9Aqua Meter's Exclusive Technology ....................... 15Navigating and Piloting .......................................... 16Transducer Mounting.............................................. 19Trouble Shooting Procedures................................. 21Maintenance and Service........................................ 23Summing Up ........................................................... 232
