Cleaning and Inspection (Exterior).(1) Use a mild soap and water solution and astiff bristle brush to remove any foreign matter fromthe exposed part of the bearing plates (fig. 3-6) and thedrum assembly.(2) Inspect the interior front plate for cracksand evidence of leaks around the valve assemblyadapter threads.(3) Inspect the interior rear plate for cracks.(4) Inspect the drum causing for cuts, deterio-ration, and evidence of leaks.Do not attempt to tow, lift or transport partiallyfiled drums, to which emergency repairs havebeen applied.(5) If drum casing requires more extensiverepair, notify direct and general support maintenance.3-8. Drum Casing Emergency Repairs (Using Type IIRepair Kit).a. Repair exterior holes in the drum casing great-ing than 3/8 inch (0.9525 cm) in length as follows:NOTEUse the 2 inch (5.08 cm) mechanical patch (10,fig. 3-7) for tears up to 1-1/2 inches (3.81 cm).(1) Roll drum over to position the torn area atthe highest point of the drum.(2) Put on the face protective hood (2, fig. 3-7)(fuel drum only).(3) Turn back the nut on the threaded shank ofthe 2 inch (5.08 cm) mechanical patch.(4) Grasp the flange with the fingers and insertthe rubber portion into the torn area. Pull forwarduntil the rubber portion is completely inside the drum.(5) Use the pliers (9, fig. 3-7) to tighten the nuton the threaded shank until the flange seals against thedrum wall.b. Use the 3, 5, or 7 inch (7.62, 12.70, or 17.78 cm)sealing clamps (4, 5 and 6, fig 3-7) for tears up to 6inches (15.24 cm).(1) Position the tear at the highest point of thedrum.(2) Put on the face protective hod (2, fig. 3-7)(fuel drum only).(3) Slip the corn loop, at the end of thethreaded shank, over the left wrist to prevent its losson the inside of the drum.(4) Release the wingnut on the threaded shankto permit entry of the bottom half of the sealing clampthrough the tear.NOTEUse knife (3, fig. 3-7) if necessary tolengthen tear to accommodate clamp.(5) Push the bottom half of clamp completelythrough the tear and pull forward to tighten it againstthe inner wall of the drum.(6) Insert upper half of clamp in threadedshank and turn entire clamp until length of clampcoincides with length of tear.(7) Place wingnut on threaded shank andtighten down to seal.Do not attempt to tow, lift or transportpartially filled drums to which emergencyrepairs have been applied.(8) If drum casing requires more extensiverepair, notify direct and general support maintenance.3-9. Swivel Plates and Shackles or D-Rings, BearingPlates and Closure Rings.a. Use a mild soap and water solution and stiffbristle brush to remove any foreign matter from theexterior of the shackles or D-Rings, swivel plates, andbearing plates.b. Inspect the shackles (fig. 3-6) for cracks anddamaged or missing screws.c. Inspect D-rings for distortion or damage.d. Inspect swivel plate for cracks and mechanicalbinding.e. Inspect closure ring and bearing plate for cracksand loose or missing capscrews.f. If replacement or repair of parts is necessary,notify direct and general support maintenance.3 - 9
