SERVICE MANUALCONNECTING RODS, PISTONS, RINGS & SLEEVESSection 56.Fit connecting rod bearings and measureRUNNING CLEARANCE and ENDCLEARANCE as follows:NOTE: Do not turn the crankshaft during thefollowing procedures.a.Running clearance check using virgin leadwire.1.Remove bearing cap, then clean and oil thecrankshaft journal.2.Place a suitable length of 0.010 in. virgin leadwire across the bearing then install the bearingcap, torquing nuts to 155 N•m (115 lbf-ft).3.After torquing nuts, remove them along with thebearing cap.4.Remove the virgin lead wire which will have beencrushed down to the amount of clearancebetween the crankshaft journal and theconnecting rod bearing.5.Measure the crushed wire with a micrometer todetermine RUNNING CLEARANCE.b.Running clearance check using"PLASTIGAGE".1.Remove bearing cap, then clean the bearingsurface and exposed half of the crankshaftkeeping them free of oil. ("Plastigage" is solublein oil).2.Place a piece of "Plastigage" across the bearingthen install the bearing cap, torquing nuts to 155N•m (115 Ibf-ft).3.After torquing nuts, remove them along with thebearing cap.4.The flattened plastic material will be foundadhering to either the bearing shell or thecrankshaft. DO NOT REMOVE THE"PLASTIGAGE".5.To determine the running clearance, comparethe width of the flattened plastic material at itswidest point with the graduated marks on theenvelope as shown in Fig. 12. The numberwithin the graduation on the envelope indicatesthe clearance in thousandths of an inch.Figure 12. - Checking Connecting Rod Bearing RunningClearancec.Running clearance check procedure usingeither virgin lead wire or "PLASTIGAGE".1.The measurement should fall within0.046mm(0.0018in.)0.130 mm (0.0051 in.)Remove the test material and reinstall thecap and bearing with correct torque ifrunning clearance specification are met.2.Repeat the chosen method of testing for allthe remaining connecting rods.CGES-185-3PRINTED IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICAPage 14
