SERVICE MANUALLUBRICATING OIL PUMP, OIL FILTERS & COOLERSection 8Depending upon the immediate conditions, the oil cancontinue on in one of two directions or, in someinstances, divide and travel in both. During normaloperation, the flow of oil continues on through both filterelements (14, Fig. 1) on its way back into the crankcasemain oil gallery. However, if the filters are not changedper Operator’s Manual recommendations, excessive filtercontamination and pressure drop will result. When suchcontamination occurs, the pressure differential type ofby-pass valve will open allowing the oil to by-pass thefilters and flow directly into the crankcase main oil gallerywhere it is distributed to all parts of the engine.OIL PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE:The unique design of the lubricating oil regulating valveextends the life of the oil filters in that it controls thevolume and pressure of the filtered oil supplied to theengine. The volume of oil supplied by the pump is inexcess of what is needed to lubricate the engine. Thisvalve divides that flow. The volume needed to lubricatethe engine is directed to the filters and excess is dumpedto return. When all points of lubrication within the engineare satisfied, restriction to flow causes pressure to buildin the filtered oil gallery and on the face of the valve. Asthis force moves the valve toward the regulator springthe port in the unfiltered oil gallery is uncovered andexcess oil is dumped to return. Due to volume changescaused by changes in engine RPM the valve will dumpmore or less oil to the return keeping filtered oil pressureand volume within the specifiedrange. Thus, the only oil filtered is that which is neededto lubricate the engine.Figure 6. - Oil Pressure Regulator Valve OperationOil Cooler:The oil cooler is mounted on the right side of the engine.All of the engine oil is circulated from the oil pumpthrough the cooler and into the oil filters.
