LUBRICATING SYSTEM - L.7LUBRICATING OIL FILTERSTo ensure cleanliness of the lubricating oil a sumpstrainer and a main full flow type of oil filter are fitted. The sump strainer consists of a gauze wire containerwhich is fitted over the end of the lubricating oil pumpsuction pipe. All oil must pass through this strainerbefore it reaches the oil pump, this ensures that noforeign matter reaches the pump which could cause anydamage. It is recommended that this strainer isremoved and thoroughly cleaned every time the sump isremoved. The main full flow type oil filter is mounted externallyon the side of the cylinder block. All the oil passesthrough this filter after it leaves the pump, but before itreaches the bearings. This filter utilizes a replaceablepaper filter element on earlier engines or a spin-oncanister type having an integral element on later enginesand no attempt should be made to clean it. It should bereplaced by a new one in accordance with PreventiveMaintenance recommended on Page C.3.To Renew Spin-on Oil Filter Canister1.Unscrew filter canister from side of oil cooler(see Fig. L.12).2.Discard old canister.3.Clean head of oil cooler.4.Using clean engine oil, liberally oil top seal ofreplacement canister.5.Fill new canister with clean lubricating oilallowing time for the oil to filter through theelement. Screw replacement canister on to endof the oil cooler until the seal just touches coolerhead. Then tighten as per instructions onFig. L.12.Removing Lubricating Oil Spin-on Canister.(lowline engines)Fig. L.13.Removing the Lubricating Oil Filter BowlSecuring Screw.(Replaceable element type)canister. Where a tool is available tighten to 15Ibf ft (2,07 kgf m) - 20 Nm.6.Run engine and check for leaks.NOTE: Oil filter canisters have internalvalves to prevent oil drain back and a specialtube stack is fitted, so always ensure that thecorrect replacement is fitted. To Remove the Filter Element(earlier engines)1.Clean the exterior of tile filter bowl.2.Unscrew the filter bowl securing bolt as shown inFig. L.13. A suitable container should be placedbeneath the filter to catch the oil in the bowl asthe securing bolt is slackened.3.Ease the filter bowl clear, lift out the old elementand discard.NOTE: Ensure that the top edge of the filterbowl is not damaged in any way duringhandling, otherwise it may be difficult toobtain an oil tight seal when it is refitted, even when using a new sealing ring.To Renew the Filter Element (earlier engines)1.Clean out the filter bowl using cleaning fluid.2.Fit the new element so that it locates correctlyon the spring loaded guide in the base of thecontainer.3.Fit the new container seal in the filter headensuring that it is correctly located in its groove.
