CRANKSHAFT AND MAIN BEARINGS—H.43.Clean the bearing housings and place the top halfbearings in position. Liberally oil the bearings withclean oil.4.Place the crankshaft in position.5.Oil the two upper thrust washer halves and slidethem into the recesses provided on either side ofthe center main bearing housing.6.Fit the lower halves of the main hearings to thehearing caps. Oil the hearings and place the capsin their respective positions ensuring that the lowerhalves of the thrust washers are correctlypositioned on either side of the center main bearingcap. When replacing the main bearing caps, ensure that they are fitted in their respectivepositions, also that they are fitted the correct wayround. The caps are numbered, No. I commencingat the front of the engine. Each cap is also markedwith a serial number as stamped on the cylinderblock bottom face. These should read in line (SeeFig. H.3).7.Examine main bearing setscrews for damage ofthreads, etc., replace where necessary. It is nolonger necessary to fit tab washers to main bearingsetscrews.8.Evenly tighten the main hearing setscrews to atorque wrench setting as given on Page B.1.9.Check the crankshaft end float to ensure that aclearance of 0.002/0.015 in (0,05/0,38 mm) exists.Oversize thrust washers may be fitted (see Fig.H.5)10.Refit the connecting rod caps and big end bearings(See Page F.4).11.Refit the rear main bearing bridge piece to thecylinder block together with new joints and sealingrubbers (see Fig. H.6). Ensure that the rear face ofthe bridge piece is in alignment with the rear face ofthe cylinder block (see Fig. H.7).12.Fit new sealing strips to the rear main bearing oilseal housings and refit the hous-Fig. H.5Checking the Crankshaft End Float.ings as described in Rope Type Crankshaft RearEnd Oil Seal. With lip type seals, refit oil sealhousing as described in Lip Type Crankshaft RearEnd Oil Seal.13.Refit and correctly align tile flywheel housing asdescribed on Page P.3. Refit the flywheel andstarter motor.14.Refit the oil pump, timing case and timing gears(see Page L.5 and K.,3)15.Refit the sump, sump strainer and the oil pumpsuction and delivery pipes.ROPE TYPE CRANKSHAFT REAR ENDOIL SEALThe housing consists of two halves bolted around therear of the crankshaft which has a shallow spiral oilreturn groove machined in it to a depth of 0.004/0.008 in(0,10/0.20 mm). The bore of the housing is machined toaccommodate a rubber cored asbestos strip. The stripconsists of two sections, one for each half of the oil sealhousing. When fitting the seal the following procedure should beadopted:—1.Set up a half housing in the vice with the sealrecess uppermost.
