SECTION NFuel SystemIntroductionThe equipment for the supply, filtration and deliveryof fuel to the engine consists of a fuel tank, a diaphragmtype fuel lift pump, fuel filters, a distributor type fuelinjection pump and four injectors. There is also a smallreservoir to provide a gravity feed to the cold starting aidin the air intake manifold.Air drawn into the engine through the inductionmanifold is filtered by a perforated mild steel gauze. This method of filtration is satisfactory for allapplications except canal, river or dockside work wheredust or other foreign matter may be present in theatmosphere. In this case a dry type air cleaner withcleanable element is preferable. As with all diesel engines, particular stress is laid onthe importance of clean, filtered fuel oil if longevity andtrouble-free operation is to be obtained.AIR FILTERSThe time period for cleaning air filters should begoverned by the conditions under which the engineoperates. The correct maintenance of the air filter will greatlyassist in reducing bore wear, thereby extending the lifeof the engine.FUEL FILTERThe fuel filter is of the paper element type, therefore,no attempt should be made to clean the element. Itshould be renewed when periodical maintenance isbeing carried out.The filters fitted to earlier engines have a separateelement positioned inside a bowl whereas filters fitted tolater engines have an encapsulated element heldbetween the filter head and the filter base. The period for changing the element will largelydepend upon the quality and condition of the fuelavailable. Under normal conditions the element shouldbe renewed every 1,000 hours. This period should bedecreased accordingly if unavoidable contamination ofthe fuel is being experienced. To Renew Earlier Type Filter Element1.Thoroughly clean the exterior of the filter bowland cover.2.Unscrew the bolt in the centre of the filter topcover (see Fig. N.1).3.Take the filter bowl and element assembly awayfrom the filter cover (see Fig. N.2).4.Throw away the dirty element. Remove thelower element scaling washer, seal seating andspring from the bowl.5.Thoroughly clean the inside of the bowlparticularly the centre tube.6.Fit the spring and seal seating to the bowl.Examine the lower seal, renew if necessary andrefit to the bowl. Place the new element inposition in the bowl.7.Ensure that the element to top cover and thebowl to top cover seals are in good condition, ifnot, replace with new seals.8.Bleed the fuel system as detailed on Page N.9.Fig. N.1.Removing the Fuel Filter Bowl Securing Bolt.(Earlier Type)
