FUEL SYSTEM - N.11An atomiser requires attention if (a), whenproceeding as above it throws out "solid" wet jets andnot broken up spray or, (b), if any of the holes arechoked or partially choked so that the spray issues onlyfrom one or two holes in the nozzle, or (c), an irregularspray pattern is formed.Atomiser DismantlingThe atomiser should be placed on a suitable holdingplate, nozzle downwards, first remove the nozzle holdercap nut (1), slacken the locknut (3), release the nozzlespring tension by turning the spring cap (4) in an anti-clockwise direction. Reverse the position of the atomiseron the holding plate and remove the nozzle cap nut (11)and nozzle (10) taking care not to drop the nozzleneedle onto the floor. Complete the dismantling byremoving the spring cap, spring (6) and spindle (7).Inspect visually for signs of corrosion, distortion, etc.Keep all the dismantled parts together, if possible, in atray to facilitate re-assembly after cleaning.NOTE: Do not lose the small steel shim washerfitted between the top of the spring and the springcap.To hold the nozzle holder cap nut in a vice or to usebadly worn or adjustable spanners is to invite trouble.InspectionThe nozzle needle should be free from all traces ofdamage, it is important that it is not "blued" at the tip dueto overheating. If the nozzle is "blued" or the seatinghas a dull circumferential ring indicating wear or pitting,the complete unit (nozzle and needle) should be setaside for attention by a depot or agent with specializedequipment available and a replacement nozzle assemblyusedThe stem of the nozzle needle should be clean andbright, free from high spots, bad scratches or dullpatches, and the grooves free from foreign matter of anykind; similarly the nozzle needle bore in the nozzle bodyshould be free from any of the above, the small drilledpassages should be checked to see that they are clear.CleaningStarting with the nozzle assembly, remove theneedle from the nozzle body and by using the soft brassseat scraper (ET 070) any carbon which may be presenton the nozzle body seat can beFig. N.16.
