TM 10-4320-346-12&PSection IV. OPERATION UNDER UNUSUAL CONDITIONS2-12. OPERATION UNDER UNUSUAL WEATHER. The FAWPSS is designed to operate normally within a wide rangeof climatic conditions. However, some extreme conditions require special operating and servicing procedures to preventundue loading and excessive wear on the equipment. These unusual conditions and the special steps to be performedare listed in the following paragraphs.a. OperationInExtremeCold. When operating the FAWPSS in temperatures down to -50°F (-45°C), extracare should be taken to minimize possible injury to personnel and damage to equipment. Special cold weatherprocedures must be followed for operation of the pump and engine assembly and collapsible water drums which are partof this FAWPSS. Refer to the applicable technical maintenance manual for the procedures to follow when operatingthese items in extremely cold temperatures.WARNINGWater can freeze very quickly and can quickly lower the temperature ofexposed skin until there is a great danger of frost bite. Prevent leakageof water onto bare skin of personnel. Remove any water from exposedskin as soon as possible.CAUTIONFreezing water can badly damage the FAWPSS components. WhenFAWPSS operations are completed at temperatures below 32°F (0°C),disconnect each end of all hose assemblies to prevent freezing waterfrom damaging equipment.b. OperationInSandyorDustyConditions. Dusty and sandy conditions can seriously affect the operation ofthe FAWPSS. When operating the FAWPSS in these dusty and sandy conditions, perform the following steps.(1) Accumulation of dust or sand in the filters of the pump and engine assembly will cause the pump tooverheat and damage the equipment. Frequently clean filters and all other areas of dust and sand accumulation. Inextreme conditions, daily cleaning of filters may be necessary. Refer to the technical maintenance manual for the pumpand engine assembly for detailed procedures which must be performed when the pump is used in dusty and sandyconditions.(2) Water which has been contaminated by dust and sand can severely affect the usability of the water.Special care must be taken that the water being pumped does not have dust or sand in it when using the FAWPSS industy and sandy conditions. Be sure that all hose and piping connections are tight. Be sure that the insides of allFAWPSS components are clean before piping connections are made during FAWPSS set up and assembly.2-12
