AIR COMPRESSOR - MIDLAND BRAKE MODELS EL-1 300, EL.16002.After connecting rod and piston assembly havebeen removed, temporarily install bearing cap onconnecting rod from which cap was removed by looselyinstalling rod bolts.3.Position other rod at bottom of stroke by turningcrankshaft and remove rod and piston as previouslydescribed.4.Remove piston pin snap rings from pistonassembly and press piston pin out of piston andconnecting rod. Then remove compression and oil ringsfrom piston using conventional piston ring expander.Refer to Figure 7.Figure 7 - Cross Section of Piston AssemblyCYLINDER BLOCKRemove six bolts and lockwashers which secure cylin-der block to crankcase; then separate cylinder blockfrom crankcase. Discard gasket.CRANKSHAFT AND BEARINGS1.Remove the four crankshaft bearing cap bolts oneach bearing cap and remove caps. Discardgaskets.2.Press the shaft seal from front bearing cap anddiscard seal.3.Remove seal and bowed washer or spring fromrear bearing cap.IMPORTANT - Do not remove crankshaft and bearingsfrom crankcase unless an inspectionreveals the necessity for removal.4.Place crankcase-crankshaft-bearing assembly inan arbor press, supporting crankcase adjacentto rear bearing. Use an adapter (shown inFigure 8) and press crankshaft rear bearingassembly from crankcase and out through rearbore.Figure 8 - Crankshaft Bearing Adapter5.When rear bearing is free from case, use abearing puller and pull rear bearing fromcrankshaft.6.Reinstall front bearing in bore of crankcase andpress shaft toward front of case. When frontbearing is free of crankcase, use the bearingpuller and remove front bearing from crankshaft.7.Crankshaft can then be moved rearward and outbottom of crankcase.CLEANING, INSPECTION ANDREPAIRWash all parts thoroughly in clean solvent. Make sure allcarbon deposits are removed from pistons and cylinderhead. Be sure all drilled oil passages in crankshaft areopen. Clean all carbon from piston ring grooves inpiston. If any of the components are not within the specifiedlimits as noted in SPECIFICATIONS in this Section, thatparticular part must be replaced.CTS-4077Y - Page 8
