Pinion Drive Clearance Check HookupPINION CLEARANCEThere are no provisions for adjusting the pinionclearance on motors using the intermediate duty clutch,Fig. 2. However, the pinion clearance should be checkedon all motors after reassembly to insure properclearance. Check the pinion clearance as follows:1.Disconnect the motor field coil connector fromthe solenoid motor terminal. CAREFULLYINSULATE IT.2.Connect a battery, of the same voltage as thesolenoid, one lead to solenoid switch terminaland the other to the starter or solenoid frame,Fig. 15.3.Connect a jumper wire to the starting motorterminal on the solenoid, then touch the secondend to the motor frame. This will shift the pinioninto cranking position and will remain until thebattery is disconnected.CAUTION: Do not keep the jumper wireconnected too long as overheating of thesolenoid may result.CGES - 230 - Page 16
