TM 5-3825-229-14&P6-11. PISTONS AND CONNECTING RODS (cont)e.Installation (cont)(3) Position upper bearing (4) in connecting rod (3) with tang of bearing in the recess of connecting rod. Lubricatebearing and crankshaft journal with oil (OE/HDO). Protect crankshaft rod journals by placing a piece of plastictubing over rod bolts during installation.(4) Compress rings (5) with a ring compressor and install piston assembly in cylinder bore by tapping on top ofpiston with a wooden hammer handle.NOTEIf any difficulty is experienced in installing piston assembly, the ring compressor must be removed and the ring setinspected for correct installation in piston ring grooves. Align lower end of connecting rod with crankshaft journal beforeinserting piston assembly into cylinder bore.(5) Install lower bearing (4) in connecting rod bearing cap (2) with tang of bearing in recess of bearing cap and lubricate.(6) Install bearing cap (2) and bearing (4) on crankshaft journal. Be sure identification numbers stamped in bearingcap are located on same side as corresponding numbers stamped in connecting rod.(7) Tighten nuts (1) to specified torque as follows:(a)Step 1.Tighten to a torque of 22 Ib-ft (30 Nm) (wet).(b)Step 2. Tighten to a torque of 40 Ib-ft (55 Nm) (wet).(c)Step 3.Final tighten to a torque of 63 Ib-ft (85 Nm) (wet).6-28
