SERVICE MANUALFig. 5 Brake Valve Applied - Loss of Air In PrimaryCircuit1Primary Piston2Primary Delivery3Relay Piston4Secondary Delivery5Secondary Exhaust Valve Closed6Secondary Inlet Valve Open7Secondary Supply8No Air in Primary CircuitBalanced - Secondary Circuit of Brake Valve (Fig. A)When the air pressure on the secondary side of the relaypiston approaches that being delivered on the primaryside of the relay piston, the relay piston moves closingthe secondary inlet valve and stopping further flow of airpressure from the supply line through the valve. Theexhaust remains closed as the secondary supplypressure balances the secondary delivery pressure. When applications in the graduating range are made, abalanced position in the primary portion is reached as theair pressure on the delivery side of the primary pistonequals the effort exerted by the driver’s foot on the pedalor treadle.A balanced position in the secondary portion is reachedwhen air pressure on the secondary side of the relaypiston closely approaches the air pressure on theprimary side of the relay piston .Fig. 6 Broke Valve In Balanced Position1Primary Piston2Primary Delivery3Primary Exhaust Valve Closed4Relay Piston5Secondary Delivery6Secondary Exhaust Valve Closed7Secondary Inlet Valve Closed8Secondary Supply9Primary Inlet Valve Closed10Primary SupplyWhen the brake pedal or treadle is fully depressed, bothprimary and secondary inlet valves remain open and fullreservoir pressure is delivered to the actuators.Releasing - Primary Circuit of Brake Valve (Fig. 7)With the brake pedal released, mechanical force isremoved from the spring seat, rubber graduating springand primary piston. Air pressure and spring load movethe primary piston, opening the primary exhaust valve, allowing air pressure in the primary delivery line toexhaust out the exhaust port.Releasing - Secondary Circuit of Brake Valve (Fig. 7)With the brake pedal released, air is exhausted from theprimary side of the relay piston. Air pressure and springload move the relay piston, opening the secondaryexhaust valve, allowing air pressure in the secondarydelivery line to exhaust out the exhaust port.CTS-4079 - CHAPTER IVPRINTED IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICAPage 5
