SERVICE MANUALCENTER BEARINGFig. 46GENERALCenter bearings (Fig. 46) are provided tosupport the propeller shaft assembly and to smooth outthe power delivered to the rear axle assembly.Loose center bearing assembly mounting boltsshould be tightened. Deteriorated or oil soaked centerbearing insulators should be replaced. These conditionscan cause excessive drive line vibration if not corrected.BALL BEARING TYPEDescriptionThe center bearing used on some vehiclesutilizes a ball bearing with the bearing housing enclosedin rubber.No lubrication for this center bearing is providedas the bearing is filled with a waterproof grease for life ofbearing.REMOVE1.Set parking brake.2.Disconnect rear propellershaft assembly(universal joint) at center bearing.3.Remove companion flange nut, then remove theyoke assembly.4.Remove the center bearing bracket mountingbolts and separate center bearing mountingbracket with bearing from center bearing bracket(on frame crossmember).5.Remove center bearing assembly and bothslingers from stud shaft.6.The center bearing is serviced as a completeassembly, therefore separating the "U" shapebracket from rubber cushion is not required.REASSEMBLYThe reassembly procedure is the reverse of thedisassembly procedure.
