S-SERIES INSTRUMENTSCABLE SERVICERemoval1.Disconnect upper end of speedometer ortachometer cable by removing four mountingscrews from instrument cluster and detachingcluster enough to expose back of cluster.2.Depress spring clasp on back of speedometer ortachometer and release cable (Figure 4).3.Unscrew cable lower or drive end from adapterat either transmission or engine component.4.Unfasten cable from any ties or slips and removecomplete cable assembly from chassis.Inspection 1.Pull the flexible core out of case.2.Check for kinks by rolling core on a flat surface.A core kink will show up as a hop at kinkedpoint.3.Check for frayed spots by running core looselythrough fingers.Core ReplacementNever reuse a kinked or frayed core. A kinked core willcause a fluctuation of speedometer or tachometerreading and a frayed core will fail completely a short timeafter being returned to service.NOTE - When replacing core, be sure core Is not toolong. A long core will cause a damaging thrust tohead of speedometer or tachometer when Installed.InstallationApply a thin coat of lubricant (IH #251 H EP) to core atreassembly as follows:1.Place approximately 1 teaspoon of lube in onehand.2.Feed the core (lower end first) through the lubeand into casing.3.Keep last four inches of cable free of lube toprevent lube from entering the instrument head.4.Install complete cable assembly in chassis andconnect in reverse order of "Removal"procedure.IMPORTANT - Avoid sharp bends when installingspeedometer or tachometer cables. Under nocircumstances should a casing have less than a sixinch radius bend. Route tachometer cable awayfrom compressor discharge line and strap to stayrod to avoid cable damage.SPEEDOMETER, TACHOMETER AND CABLE TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDEPROBLEMPROBABLE CAUSESOLUTIONInoperative1Cable disconnected1Connect cable.2Broken core2Repair or replace.3Damaged speedometer or3Replace.tachometer.Indicator pointer fluctuates1Kinked core1Repair or replace.2Cable improperly routed2Route cable correctly.3Cable improperly installed in3Install cable correctly.speedometer or tachometer head.Noisy, clicking or squealing1Damaged or worn parts in1Replace.speedometer or tachometer.2Damaged core2Repair or replace.3Cable improperly routed3Route cable correctly.Reads incorrectly1Wrong adapter1Install correct adapter.2Cable improperly installed2Install cable correctly.3Speedometer or tachometer not3Replace.calibrated.CTS-4140Y Page 7
