VI. STEERABLE DRIVE END ASSEMBLYH.Wheel Hub Assembly1.Assemble the wheel bearing cups and the outeraxle shaft drive studs to the wheel hub.2.On disc style wheel hubs:Press wheel studs into place. Left threadstuds go into the left hand hub, right hand threadstuds into the right hub.On cast spoke style hubs:Assemble the brake drum to the cast spokehub and secure with bolts, washers, and nuts.Tighten bolts to correct torque. Install the rimstuds to cast spoke hub.3.Pack the inner wheel bearing cone with theproper lubricant and insert into the wheel hub.4.Coat the outside circumference of the wheel hubseal with liquid sealant and press into the hub.5.Pack the cavity between the inner and outerwheel bearing to level of the small diameter ofthe bearing cups.6.On disc style drum:Adjust the brakes to match closely, but stillclear the brake drum.On cast spoke hubs:Adjust the brakes to match the brake drumby using a brake shoe adjusting gauge.Measure the I.D. of the drum and adjust thebrakes to match the gauge reading. The gaugeis available from the McMaster-Carr Supply Co.,Los Angles.7.Position the wheel hub or cast spoke hub anddrum carefully over the spindle, brake andspindle yoke assembly. (See fig. 17). Rotatethe hub while positioning over spindle.8.Pack the outer wheel bearing and install over thespindle.9.Install the wheel bearing adjusting nut withdowel, if used, dowel facing outward (or up).(See fig. 16).10. Adjust the wheel bearings per III-B.I.Outer Drive Yoke and Outer Drive Axle ShaftAssembly1.The outer drive yoke should be complete with abearing race pressed on its hub. This raceshould not have been removed at disassemblyunless either the yoke or race were replaced bynew parts.2.Lubricate the seal and bearing surface of theouter drive yoke and put the yoke in place in thebearing and seal that is in spindle yoke. (Seefig. 37).3.Apply a bead of liquid sealant to the outer axleshaft flange. See Service Bulletin 738 407, Page22.4.Install the yoke spacer ring onto the outer axleshaft splines. Insert the shaft into the spindlebore, rotate and align the splines with the driveyoke splines, rotate the shaft and yoke to alignthe flange holes with the drive studs. (See fig.38). Insert the long (2 inch) yoke retaining boltthrough a new sealing washer, through theretaining washer and into the threaded hole inthe shaft end. (See fig. 39). Tighten to specifiedtorque.5.Push axially on the outer drive yoke and checkfor positive clearance under the axle shaftflange. The clearance should be at least .015-inch. (See fig. 40).6.Install the locknuts to retain the axle shaft.Tighten to specified torque.7.On oil lubricated wheel bearing, turn wheel hubto position the oil plug hole in the outer axle shafthorizontally. (See fig. 41). Fill hub with specifiedoil, install plug.8.Install the hub cap.Fig. 37- 18 -
