ENGINE DIAGNOSTIC TEST PROCEDURESSection 6•MEASURE SMOKE INTENSITY- 400 Series On-Highway(with Robert Bosch MW Pumps)FROM FORM NO. CGED-365MEASURE SMOKE INTENSITY*15MEASURE AT FULL LOAD & RATED SPEED (RPM)INSTRUMENTGUIDELINEDATA‚1st CHECK2nd CHECKSMOKE SAMPLINGKIT (SE-2580)*Engine must be at normal operating temperature.pRefer to "Performance Data Guidelines", in this section.General DescriptionThe smoke sampling kit (SE-2580) is used to measuresmoke levels at the exhaust stack at full load and ratedspeed. The smoke sampling kit (SE-2580) sampling pumpdraws off a precise amount of exhaust gas from theexhaust pipe of the respective engine and then sucks itthrough a filter paper disk. The filter paper disk, in turn, darkens during this processand thus gives the measure of the soot content of theexhaust gases. The filter disk is then compared to theBacharach Oil Burner Smoke Scale (Chart C). TheBosch smoke number is then determined and comparedto the standards given in the Performance DataGuidelines, in this section.CGES-240-4Printed in United States of AmericaPage 39
