TM 5-3895-370-14&P4-55. THERMOSTAT REPLACEMENT (CONT).b.Cleaning/Inspection.(1)Clean housing and thermostat by flushingwith water. Dry with lint-free cloth.(2)Inspect vent notch on the lip of thermostatfor rust and corrosion. If notch is not openor damaged, replace thermostat.(3)Inspect housing for corrosion and cracks.Replace if damaged.WARNINGPerform thermostat inspection instrict accordance with TM 750-254,Cooling Systems: Tactical Vehicles,or death or injury to personnel mayresult.(4)Inspect operation by placing thermostat incontainer of water on temperaturecontrolled heater. Thermostat shouldbegin to open at 181 degrees F (83degrees C) and fully open at 203 degreesF (95 degrees C). If thermostat failsinspection, replace thermostat.c.Installation.(1)Install thermostat (9) in housing (5).Ensure that jiggle pins and tang areinstalled correctly in their notches.CAUTIONEnsure gasket is installed properlywith recess toward housing. Failureto do so may cause coolant system toleak and damage engine.(2)Install gasket (8) in cylinder head (7).(3)Install lifting bracket (6) and housing (5)with three screws (3 and 4). Tightenscrews 18 lb-ft (24 Nm).(4)Install hose (2) and tighten clamp (1).NOTEFollow-on maintenance:Install alternator support (para 4-64).Fill coolant system (para 4-56).END OF TASK4-138
