TM 5-3895-370-14&P(11)Determine rod bearing clearance for each rod asfollows:(a)Install four rod caps (4) on connectingrods (3) with 12 screws (5). Tightenscrews 73 lb-ft (99 Nm).(b)Measure each connecting rod (3) atposition F. Record smallest diameter.(c)Measure crankshaft (6) at position G foreach rod (3). Normal measurement is2.7150 to 2.7170 in. (68.961 69.012 mm).(d)Subtract smallest crankshaftmeasurement from smallest connectingrod measurement. Clearance should beno greater than 0.0035 in. (0.0889 mm).(e)If rod bearing clearance exceeds 0.0035in. (0.0889 mm), replace bearings. Ifclearance still exceeds measurement limit, replace connecting rod and rod cap.NOTETo ensure proper measurement ofrings, install rings with printed sideup.(12)Install each ring in cylinder approximately 3.5 in.(88.9 mm) deep (position H). Level ring usingpiston (1).(13)Remove piston (1) and measure each ring gapat position I. If below or above limits, replacering. Normal measurements are as follows:(a)Top ring is 0.0160 to 0.0275 in. (0.40640.6985 mm).(b)Intermediate ring is 0.0100 to 0.0215 in.(0.254 0.5461 mm).(c)Oil control ring is 0.0100 to 0.0215 in.(0.254 0.5461 mm).5-283
