REMOTE VOLTAGE CONTROLTESTING AND ADJUSTINGSUBJECT:Remote Voltage Level Control For Caterpillar GeneratorsBUSINESS:Building Services, Material Handling, Marine, Petroleum, AgriculturePRODUCT/APPLICATION:Generator Sets, SRCR and SR 4It is sometimes desirable to control the voltage level of agenerator at a remote-mounted control panel rather thanat the generator. These instructions cover the selectionand installation of a remote potentiometer to provide thesame full range of voltage level control as the originalgenerator mounted control. These instructions move thepoint of control from the generator to the remotelocation.SelectionofPotentiometerControlIf screw driver slot adjustment with locking feature isacceptable, the original generator mounted control canbe moved to the remote location. A parts service control(duplicate of original) could also be used. If a knobadjustment and indicator dial is desired, select a 25 wattwire wound potentiometer of suitable shaft length toaccommodate the knob and dial. SRCR Generatorsrequire a 25 ohm, 25 watt potentiometer. SR4generators require a 500 ohm, 25 watt potentiometer.Wiring the Remote Voltage Level Control:1.Prepare three lengths of No. 14 600 voltinsulated wire. Use one yellow wire, one redwire, and one white wire. Cable these wires toavoid damage. Connect the potentiometer tothe three wires as follows:Yellow Wire - Solder to the clockwise end of thepotentiometer.Red Wire - Solder to the counter-clockwise endof the potentiometer.White Wire - Solder to the sliding arm contact ofthe potentiometer and to the counterclockwiseend of the potentiometer along with the red wire.2.Disconnect the existing generator mountedvoltage level control at the terminals notedbelow. Insulate each of the removed wires andsecure these to avoid any vibration damage.Connect the wires to the terminals designated:A.SRCR Generators With Panel MountedTwo Phase Half Wave Exciter (SerialNumbers below 1500)1.Remove existing white wire atterminal 17, red wire at terminal 20,and yellow wire at terminal 16.2.Connect new white wire to terminal17, red wire to terminal 20, andyellow wire to terminal 16.B.SRCR Generators With Tray MountedTwo-Phase Half Wave Exciter (SerialNumbers 1500-2000)1.Remove existing white wire fromterminal TB1-3, red wire fromterminal TB1-5, and yellow wirefrom terminal TB1-4.2.Connect new white wire to terminalTB1-3, red wire to terminal TB1-5,and yellow wire to terminal TB1-4.C.SRCR Generators With Tray MountedTwo-Phase Half Wave Exciter (SerialNumbers above 2000)100
