SECTION HCrankshaft and Main BearingsCRANKSHAFT AND MAIN BEARINGSThe crankshaft runs in fi ve pre-finished replaceableshell bearings lined with aluminum tin.Crankshaft end float is controlled by four thrustwashers which are located on both sides of the centermain bearing housing. 0.0075 in (0,19 mm) oversizethrust washers are available which may he combinedwith standard thrust washers to give an adjustment of0.0075 in (0.19 mm) or when used on both sides of thebearing housing, give an adjustment of 0.(15 in (0.,38mm).The main bearings are located in position by tabsfitting into slots machined in the bearing housings.Note: Main bearing cap setscrewtabwashers have been deleted on laterengines. It is therefore no longer necessaryto replace these tabwashers when fittingmain hearing cap setscrews. The tighteningtorquefor these setscrews remainsunchanged. To Remove Main Bearings and Thrust WashersUnder normal circumstances, by the time the mainbearings, require renewing the crankshaft will need to beremoved for regrinding. However,Fig. H.1.Removing a Main Bearing Cap.Fig. H.2Removing a Main Rearing Shell with the Crankshaft"in situ.”removal of main bearing and thrust washers can hecarried out without withdrawn the crankshaft. Proceedas follows : —1.Remove the sump. sump strainer and the oil pumpsuction and delivery pipes (see page L.3).2.Remove the two setscrews securing the mainbearing cap. Only remove one bearing cap at atime.3.Slacken the setscrews on the remaining bearingcaps. To gain access to the rear main bearingsetscrews, the rear main bearing bridge piece mustbe removed. This is secured by two recessedsetscrews to the cylinder block and the two lowerrear main oil seal housing securing setscrews.Access to the front main bearing setscrews can beachieved by removing the lubricating oil pump (seePage L.3).4.Remove the lower half of the bearing from thebearing cap and with a suitable piece of thin hardwood push out the top half of the bearing byrotating it on the crankshaft, apply the wooden stripto the opposite side
