PISTONS AND CONNECTING RODS—F.3To Assemble the Pistons and Rings to the Con-necting RodsIf the original pistons are being used they must beassembled to the same connecting rods, i.e. the pistonstamped 1 on the crown must be fitted to the rod marked1. For markings of pistons and connecting rods seeFigs. F.4 and F.6.1.Warm the piston in clean liquid to a temperature of100°/120F (40/50C). It will he noted that thecavity in the piston crown is off-set towards oneside of the piston. Therefore, place the piston onthe connecting rod with the cavity towards the sideof the rod which carries the rod and capidentification numbers. Insert the gudgeon pin andfit the retaining circlips ensuring that they areseating correctly in the piston grooves.2.Check the fitted ring gap of the compression andscraper rings (see Technical Data).Note: Then checking fitted ring gap in worncylinders, the ring should be checked at thebottom of the cylinder.3.Fit the piston rings to the piston in the followingorder:Slotted Scraper—below the gudgeon pin.Spring Expanded Oil Control—above the gudgeon pin.Internally Stepped Compression—third groove.Internally Stepped Compression—second groove.Chromium Plated Compression—top groove.Note: When fitting internally steppedcompression rings, ensure that the "step" istowards the piston crown. To Fit the Pistons and Connecting Rods to theCylinder Bore1.Before fitting the piston and connecting rodassemblies to their respective cylinder bores.Fig. F.5.Piston Fitting with the aid of an adjustable ring clamp.thoroughly clean and liberally coat each bore withclean engine oil.2.Using a suitable ring guide (see Fig. F.5), insert thepistons and connecting rods into the top of thecylinder bores, ensuring thatFig. F.6.Showing markings on Piston
