SERVICE MANUALSERVICE INSTRUCTIONSDISASSEMBLING UNIVERSAL JOINT1.SNAP RING - Remove by pinching the ends togetherwith a pair of pliers. If a ring does not readily snapout of the groove in the yoke, tap the end of thebearing cap lightly to relieve the pressure against thering (Fig. 24).2.THRUST PLATE CONSTRUCTION (Fig. 25) -Remove capscrews and plate. The balance of thedisassembly and assembly instructions are the sameas those for snap ring joints.3.NEEDLE BEARING CAP - Remove by driving on theend of one bearing cap until the opposite bearingcap comes out. Turn the joint over and tap theexposed end of the journal cross until the oppositeneedle bearing cap is free. Use a soft round driftwith flat face about .79 mm (1/32") smaller than thehole diameter in the yoke, otherwise, there is dangerof damaging the bearing.Fig. 24Fig. 254.JOURNAL CROSS- Remove by sliding it to the sideof the yoke and tilting it over the top of the yoke lug(Fig. 26).ASSEMBLING UNIVERSAL JOINTReassembly is merely reverse order of the aboveoperations. On joints without a lubrication fitting, repackreservoirs in the journal cross ends with therecommended lubricant. Make sure the reservoir ineach trunnion is filled. With the rollers in the race, fill therace about 1/2 full (Fig. 27).Fig. 271Fill Race 1/2 Full With LubeU-BOLT CONSTRUCTIONU-Bolt joints are a combination of U-Bolt and snapring construction (Fig. 28).
