ENGINE DIVISION SERVICE MANUALELECTRICALDESCRIPTIONHeavy duty, enclosed shift lever type starting motors-are designed to protect the shift lever and solenoidplunger from dirt, road splash and icing conditions. The nose housing can be rotated to obtain a numberof different solenoid positions with respect to themounting flange, which permits a variety of mountingapplications.NOTE: Be sure to mark the location of the nose housingin some manner to assure proper location of nosehousing-to-lever housing upon reassembly of startingmotor.Either the intermediate duty or the heavy dutyoverrunning type sprag clutches may be used on theheavy duty starting motors with the enclosed shift lever. Both types of clutches are shifted into mesh with theflywheel ring gear by action of the solenoid. When thedrive pinion is engaged with the fly-wheel, the pinion willnot be permitted to disengage until the engine hasstarted and the solenoid circuit is interrupted. Some of the heavy duty starting motors feature aseal between the shaft and lever housing, and all of theheavy duty starting motors with the enclosed shift leverhave a rubber boot or linkage seal over the solenoidplunger. These seals prevent the entry of dirt and oil intothe motor main frame.CGES-230 - Page 2PRINTED IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICAFig. 1 Heavy Duty Starting Motor with Enclosed Shift
