SERVICE MANUALd.Carefully expand and remove the pistonring (Fig. 7) from the turbine wheel andshaft.INSPECTIONBefore cleaning, inspect all the components forsigns of rubbing or other defects which might not beevident after cleaning.Submerge and soak all parts in a good metalcleaner. The cleaning solution should be agitated to do asatisfactory job, but special care should be taken toinsure the parts do not strike each other.Never use a caustic solution for cleaning,as this will permanently damage certain parts.Use only a soft brush, plastic blade scraper orcompressed air jet to remove deposits. Never use a wirebrush or steel blade scraper for this purpose.Be sure all wheel blades are thoroughlycleaned, as any deposits left on the blades willaffect balance.Clean all internal cavities of the center housingthoroughly with compressed air.Check both wheels of the rotor assembly fordamaged or distorted vanes and for possible contact withtheir respective housings and air inlet. The spacingbetween the vanes and the contour must be uniform.Check for cracked, bent or damaged blades. Replace ifnecessary.Donotattempttostraightenblades.Inspect the turbine housing for cracks orexcessive scoring in the outlet contour. Inspect thecompressor housing for damage.On the DT-466 turbocharger, inspect the thrustwasher and collar for wear or damage. Inspect the thrustspring in the back plate for wear or damage. This springneed not be removed unless damage is evident.TURBINE WHEEL AND SHAFTInspect the bearing surfaces for excessivescratches and wear. If the shaft is only slightlyscratched, it may be reused. Never grind or polish theshaft, as this will affect balance.Inspect piston ring groove walls for scoring.Minor scratches are acceptable.Check carefully for cracked, bent or damagedturbine blades.Do not attempt to straighten blades.BEARINGSInspect for scratches or worn surfaces.
