Inspection.NOTEUnless flywheel housing has obviousdamage, measure it for flywheelhousing-to-crankshaft concentricityto determine whether it needs to bereplaced.(1)Attach dial indicator to crankshaft (1) as shown.(2)Position dial indicator at 12 o'clock position.Adjust dial until it reads zero.(3)Slowly rotate crankshaft (1) until indicatorreaches the 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock, and12 o'clock positions. Record indicatormeasurements at each position.NOTEWhen the indicator reaches the 12 o'clock position again, be sure the indicatorneedle points to zero. If needle does not point to zero, results will be incorrect andit will be necessary to perform step (3) again.(4)With dial indicator at 12 o'clock and using a pry bar, carefully raise rear of crankshaft (1). Record themeasurement from the dial indicator. This measurement is called bearing clearance.(5)Determine bearing clearance adjustment by subtracting 1/2 of bearing clearance measurement, obtained in step(5), from 6 o'clock position, recorded in step (3). See Example 1.5-46
