SERVICE MANUALTURBOCHARGERSSection 14.Using a new gasket, place the Turbocharger onthe exhaust manifold and install the four boltsand nuts. DO NOT torque at this time.5.Make certain that the oil inlet and oil drain linesare clean. If hoses are used, make certain thatthey have not hardened and that the Inner lininghas not deteriorated or started to flake off. Ifmetal tubing is used, make certain that it is notrestricted or collapsed.6.Install the oil inlet and drain lines to thecrankcase and Turbocharger center housing,rotating the Turbocharger center housing toproperly align the oil lines.7.When alignment has been accomplished scribea mark on the center and turbine housings forreference as shown in Fig. 8.Figure 8. -- Center and Turbine Housing Aligned1.Scribe Marks8.Rotate the compressor housing to align the aircrossover tube and hoses to the intake manifold.9.Scribe a reference mark on the center andcompressor housing.10.Remove Turbocharger from the engine and withscribe marks in alignment torque the clamp andall bolts to specifications (consult TurbochargerService Manual for proper torques) and bend thelock tabs on the lockplates to secure bolts.11.SPIN the wheels of the Turbocharger. The shaftmust rotate with no Interference at either end ofthe Turbocharger.12.If the Turbocharger Is not to be Installedimmediately, lubricate internally and Installprotective covers on all openings.13.Using the new gasket (from step 4), place theTurbocharger on the exhaust manifold and installthe four bolts and nuts (consult the servicemanual for proper torque).NOTE: Use IH "NEVER SEEZ" compound on theTurbocharger mounting bolts before running thenuts on. This will aid In future removal.14.Install the exhaust outlet system.NOTE: Use IH "NEVER SEEZ" to lubricate seal ringson exhaust sleeve, (If so equipped) and all threadedfasterners used.15.Remove the covers or plugs from the oil-inletand outlet parts. Using a new gasket, connectthe oil outlet tube.16.With a squirt can, put four or five ounces ofclean IH 30W engine oil into the oil-inlet openingof the Turbocharger. This will provide sufficientlubrication for the Turbocharger bearings untilnormal engine lubrication is established.17.Connect the oil inlet tube to the Turbochargerusing a new gasket.18.Connect the air crossover tube and hoses to thecompressor housing outlet and tighten theclamps.19.Connect the air cleaner Turbochargerconnecting hardware.CGES-185-3PRINTED IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICAPage 9
